Jackson Fawkes Glass Art Studio

The Jackson Fawkes glass art studio occupies part of Stafford Mill, a 250 year old historic landmark in Stroud’s ‘Golden Valley’, an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Cotswolds, England, UK.

Dedicated to creating unique glass sculptures their glass art studio is large and well equipped, enabling them to take on projects of varying scale and continue to be experimental when ideas demand.

Making their own work Sally Fawkes and Richard Jackson have a highly knowledgable and intimate relationship with glass which is reflected in the facilities that they have built up over the years, from several large kilns of different types and sizes for kiln forming glass to areas for original model and mould making in various materials to extensive tooling to sculpt and cold work glass.
Richard Jackson and Sally Fawkes set up their first glass art studio in 2000, and moved to the present site in 2005.

Cold-working skills open up a world of sculpting glass. We both have years of on the job learning, investing in the right equipment along the way for the work we have wanted to make. There is so much room for creativity in how we work with glass after it is cast. Rising to the challenges creatively keeps potential and quality of outcomes developing.
This large variable speed flatbed is a vital part of making our work. It is a joy to use. It has a beautiful 36 inch flat cast iron plate. We specifically asked for it to not have the fixing nut sticking up so that we can grind large pieces using the whole width of the plate.

Here Richard is grinding the base of a 45 kg sculpture to get its core balance just right.
We achieve this with Sally turning the wheel by hand to get it started and then grinding using a slow mechanised speed. #glasssculpture #jacksonfawkesglass #coldworking #grinding #creativity

The Contemporary Glass Society are delighted to share that something very exciting is coming to their YouTube channel in the coming weeks. CGS received funding from The Space, Arts Council and The Glass Sellers charity to produce a series of films sharing glass making in the UK, showing some of the different techniques’ artists use, their inspiration, industrial processes and the fantastic community creating inn glass.

CGS worked with Ben from Directed by Good to storyboard their ideas and bring them to life on locations up and down the UK getting up close to huge industrial processes and seeing tiny details being formed in studios, the variety of starting points for many of the artists and the many, many hours of learning, dedication and patience put into producing stunning pieces of glass. As you will see they visited us in Stroud!
