I’m very pleased and relieved that ‘Exhale’, our exhibition of glass sculptures by Richard Jackson and Sally Fawkes (collaborating as @jackson.fawkes) is now open in the gardens at Buscot Park. It’s Buscot Park’s first ever temporary exhibition of contemporary art, and Jackson Fawkes’ first ever UK solo outdoor exhibition.
The last two months have been a whirlwind (not the kind that breaks glass, fortunately). Although we started discussing a possible exhibition in the autumn, we only took the final decision to go ahead on 29 January, and ‘Exhale’ opened to the public on 29 March. I would NOT recommend this schedule to anyone, but I’m so glad we pulled out all the stops. Richard and Sally’s sculptures work so well with the locations they chose around the gardens, it’s hard to believe they weren’t made specifically for the sites. Massive shout out to Geoff, our groundsman, who masterminded the installation, no small task when one of the sculptures is over 3m tall, and you’re contending with high winds, heavy clay soil and possibly the wettest winter on record.
It has been a pleasure to work with Richard and Sally these last few months. I especially enjoyed visiting their studio and learning about the making process (serious machinery) and the idea of creating sculptures in ‘four’ dimensions (no, not time, but the internal volume of a transparent medium). They’ve got some great videos on their website which show closeups of their technical marvels.
I had hoped to be at Buscot for opening day on Good Friday but was forced to admit defeat to a vicious bout of bronchitis that would not go away (note to self: if you try to do too much, it will catch up with you eventually). But we’ve already had warm feedback from visitors who have followed the sculpture trail, and that’s what it’s all about.

I (Sally) have been teaching @_glass_and_ceramics on the island of Bornholm, Denmark for 20 years now to teach the introduction to glass casting on the Batchelor Craft course. It is a very busy week!
We start by making simple clay models that the students set up as static glass casts.
While these casts are in the kiln the students create three dimensional models with undercuts in modelling wax, manipulating the wax by hand. The moulds they make for these are more complex lost wax casting moulds and are larger.
While these moulds are steaming out we move on to the fun of making hot pour gelflex moulds of objects of the students choosing. These range from vegetables to toothbrushes to rocks to candlesticks to toy guns to even, one year a whole chicken carcass.
While their gelflex moulds are cooling and solidifying the students start on their next challenge. They are all given a very plain wax vessel which, by any means they choose through experimentation, they transform into a unique vessel. This third round of mould making means the students stretch their skills further by having scaled up again.
They also make glass casts of the objects from life that they made rubber moulds of.
The first simple static casts come out of the kiln just in time to get a few hours of cold working time on their objects before I head home.
While this is all going on there is the technical side of all the aspects of casting glass such as firing cycles, different mould materials, working temperatures, different glasses, heat reactions, and a whole host of variables that require consideration when learning the process and… lest we forget the all important weaving of creative ideas into the fabric of making.

I (Sally) have been reunited with a glass sculpture I made 23 years ago in 2001 that had sustained a couple of chips during a house move. Moments like these are rather special, as memories surface.
Diametrical Response formed part of a 3 person exhibition titled ‘A Sense of Place’ @scottishgallery with @colinreidglass and Maria Barnes, during April and May 2001.
This exhibition was the start of a good working relationship with the Scottish Gallery with a few solo exhibitions and part of many group shows. I am extremely grateful to Amanda Game who was a director and curator of the area of applied arts for the opportunity early on in my career as an artist working glass. I had many excellent conversations with Amanda over the years and echoes of her words and guidance follow me still today. In fact we still manage the meeting of our words on occasion and these meetings still mean a lot to me.
It is also a good time to connect with how your own work has developed over time.
Diametrical Response is now repaired and back with its owner.

What better day than International Women’s Day to reveal that Sally’s glass sculpture Eternal Exchange XXVI has recently been purchased for the permanent collection @museeduverreconches in France . Sally is pictured here with Eric Louet, director of the museum and Eternal Exchange XXVI whilst is was on display in our joint exhibition Inspirer Expirer last year.
A big thank you to Eric, the city of Conches, the museum trustees and the French museums committee in Paris for making this acquisition possible.
